What to Expect

Confession and Absolution

I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.  Psalm 32:5

As a church body, we confess our sins together, admit our failures, and ask for God’s mercy.         The Pastor, as a called servant, announces the forgiveness of sins, based on the death and resurrection of Jesus.  Those who are able may kneel during confession.

Scripture Readings

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Romans 10:17

Two or three Bible passages are read, traditionally, an Old Testament reading, an Epistle reading, and a Gospel reading.  We stand during the Gospel.

Apostles Creed

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4

The Creed is a historic statement of faith that we profess together, uniting us to one another       and to other Christians throughout the centuries.

Sermon

The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.         Acts 13:44

The sermon is an expounding on God’s Word, based on the Scripture readings, and will      include God’s law, which condemns us, and Christ’s gospel, which saves.

Prayers

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  Philippians 4:6

Prayers are both extemporaneous and written, as in the Lord’s Prayer and in the Psalms.

Sacraments

He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.        Titus 3:5

In Baptism and Communion, God’s Word and the elements of water, bread, and wine              work as a means for us to receive the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
